Greetings Humans....Get comfy... This post is a bit long.

There were 10 Bassists and their bands present at this years One Day of Bass in Chicago. This event was brought to you by Jauqo III-X and New Life Portage Park....and the letter B. This was an all day event. We got there at 1pm and left after 10pm.

Let's get started shall we

First up was Ian Zamost and his drummer with some rockin' effects heavy slap. Nice way to start the days event.

Next we had Tim Siesser and his band. For some reason I have no footage of this set. Which is a shame...This is one tight act. The melodies present were wonderfully pleasing. I do have a pic though.

Bill Clements was insane...figuratively....He did appear to be in his right mind. Apparently he and his percussionists Were winging much of the set and damn that's brave and amazing. It was rather stunning to witness.

Apologies for my phone camera....I do however have a clear picture of Bill's Lakland and his boots:

Will Howard was smooth and mellow...compared to the high energy of bill...He told a story about one of the basses he was playing. He picked it up at a garage sale for 100 bucks. This is not the 100 bass... It's on the stand next to him glowing...

Dave and I played after Will. It was HOT on that stage. Minimal mishaps...so that's good. I played through a Genz Benz streamliner 900 paired with a 210 ubercab for the first time and I was really impressed. I had to turn some of the low end down! I basically ran it pretty flat, mostly because I can get a lot of the tone I need from my Skjold Bass. couple that with the fact that I loop... some of the cabs I've used seem to have a hard time with all the layers that I use. I detected no issues from this rig. I was very impressed. I wanted to try out he Overton amps and cabs that were there but didn't get a chance to... So I can't comment on them other than to say they sounded good when the other performers used them.

Ken "Mr. Lotus" Edmond Bass and drum groove oriented jams with the bass thick with effects....Lovely.

Michael Cybulskie "Big Mikey C" was very impressive indeed. He uses a short scale Watson bass. I believe he said it is 30.7 scale. That man can play! He's tight...very good stuff here. Did some Rocco Prestia stuff and some Jaco and a solo piece as well. Was very happy to have seen this.

Vuyani Wakaba and his band utilized some very impressive percussive elements..it was wonderful. Smooth soloing from Vuyani.

Jauqo III-X played his signature Avant-Funk with his band. Another apology for my camera phone... Had to get this one while plugged in from the back of the room:

Quintin Berry blew us all away...He has a very unique way of playing the bass. He also had everyone gather around the stage....that was great. by the end of the night everyone had spread out and he made the evening intimate...My Drummer even got to perform with Quintin through some Kings X and Jimy Hendricks. A wonderful way to end the night.

I'd have to say the biggest thing I learn from these events is to Breath... Relax...do your thing. Because ultimately everyone is so different in approach from player to player, even if they are similar in genre.

I've been a bad blogger...Several shows have passed with Flat Earth Agenda and we've got more coming up.

We've found ourselves playing a lot of art galleries... which I didn't expect but am thankful for. Last month we played The Mix Verticle and Frankies, Tonight we're heading to Space 237 to perform for their art opening and next month will have us playing two shows, Woodchucks, Madhouse art galleries and a third gallery as yet to be confirmed.

We're also working on the next album as well....

Show and name Change

Greetings,

After much deliberation I've decided to give a name to the project with Dave. This will allow a distinction between my solo sets and the sets that include Dave as drummer and whoever else we decide to throw into the mix. I didn't want to create confusion, but taking the stage with my name alone when there are others contributing to the music just didn't feel right.

So...

Dave and I are now Flat Earth Agenda.

I like the name...there's a lot of flexibility to it...Which mean the project can ultimately include other players and genres.

Which brings me to this:

Our first show under the name Flat Earth Agenda is tomorrow night Sat Jan 15th at Woodchucks in Toledo Ohio. With Excuse for a Weekend and The New Captains.

New EP Released...

I've released a new EP titled "Theories of Rocketry." It contains three tracks, two older songs and one new one partially recorded live all with Dave Kontak pulling drum duty. Dave brings a much needed depth and musicality to the project. I felt an EP was needed before the second full length is complete, I'm that excited about it.

Sept 18th Show and EP...

How's everyone doing?

I have another show coming up this week at the Ground Level Coffeehouse on Sept 18 with several performers.

Chris Darby (Chicago) and Longsleeves (San Diego) together on tour are stopping by the Ground Level Coffeehouse. Self described as Indie / Folk. They will be putting on an acoustic set.

Steve Jad (Toledo) acoustic guitarist, who uses an array of altered tunings, will perform as well .He has been described as sounding a lot like Michael Hedges. He also has a killer voice.

I will do my thing (Solo Bass) and will also perform with Steve Jad...which will be a blast as it's been a while since we've gotten the chance to do so.

In other news... I am getting ready to release an EP. I am excited about it as it features Dave Kontak on drums. There are old songs and at least on new one. If all goes well it'll be out in a few weeks.

I spent how long asleep?!?

(The track "Sin Nombre" has since been removed...I ended up not liking it after repeated listening. However in it's absence, Please to enjoy a trailer of "The Howling III: The Marsupials" at the end of the post.)

Here's another preview. Tentatively titled Sin Nombre simply because like most of my songs... it usually doesn't have a name. I have to sit with a tune for a while before it gets a name...I joke that I simply look around the room to find inspiration...This one almost was titled "Lamp."

I was hoping to have a lot more done by now, but if you've been following me on twitter, you know that I was very ill with a pretty nasty case of meningitis. I was in the hospital for weeks and spent a few days in a medical coma. I missed a little more than a month of work and have only been back at work for a few weeks. I'm feeling a lot better now and I've decided that I needed to get back to the projects I've had in mind and finish them.

There's no telling what might happen next...

Presented by the College’s School of Arts and Sciences on Findlay-area Campus and the Department of Fine and Performing Arts on the Toledo-area Campus, Johns’ appearance at Owens will occur from 1-3 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre on the Toledo-area Campus. In addition, the College will host a reception for Johns prior to his presentation on Saturday from 12:30-1 p.m. The reception will take place in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Rotunda. Admission to the event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Master Class and Electric Bass Clinic will feature discussion about Johns’ musical background as well as insight into forming a genuine connection with audiences as a musician. Highlighted topics will also include the importance of self promotion and marketing and the Internet as it relates to a professional career in the music industry. Additionally, Johns plans to share his musical talents with attendees during the clinic.

Johns began honing his skills at a very young by performing in various soul, funk, blues and jazz bands. From humble beginnings, the Cleveland-based musician has since entertained audiences worldwide with his electric jazz-funk/fusion sound. Johns has more than 25 years of bass experience and has worked with such musical talents as Victor Wooten, Buddy Miles and Dweezil Zappa.

The culmination of Johns’ musical experiences led him to release his first critically-acclaimed solo CD “Doug Johns” in 2006. Johns has followed up his solo debut with the release of “Pocket Fulla Nasty” in 2008. The internationally-recognized bassist is currently performing as part of a two-person project, the Doug Johns Duo, featuring drummer Chris Ceja.

In other news (of the gig type):

I am pleased to report that I am now hosting a bi monthly event at a local coffee shop called The Ground Level titled "The Amplified Resonance Showcase"

The idea behind the events are to recreate the house concert atmosphere while supporting a local coffee shop that sells locally roasted fair trade coffee. It's also a musician friendly place, and hey they also allows a solo bassist to invite great musicians to take over the place every two months. I love house concerts, It's a win for everyone, including the musicians, but until my family and I get out of the new baby stage...no more house concert hosting for now.

I have a lot of great musicians lined up for the next few months, and I am VERY excited to have them perform.

First up I am very pleased to report that on March 13th Harp Guitarist Eric Loy will be performing with me at The Ground Level. He's got so many strings...it must be a nightmare to tune. Check this out..it's pretty spectacular:

On May 8th Chapman Stick player Glenn Poorman will be heading in from Detroit to perform. I've had the pleasure to do a couple of shows with Glenn in the past and I must say, I am a big fan of his work. Fellow looper and a good chap to boot. Check him out doing his thing here:

I have more spectacular musicians scheduled for June and July, I know...not technically bi monthly, but schedules demand it..trust me...it's going to be awesome. So yeah, I've been blathering on about Bandcamp for a while now. I've even pointed you in the direction of a nice directory of Bandcamp musicians. But that assumed you had all the time in the world to read my post, go read Steve's post and listen to the rather large amount of peeps there. Let's see if we can make it a tad easier.

Bandcamp and new things afoot...a foot....uhfute

Bandcamp seems to have become the next big thing for musicians. It's super easy to use and it has all the usual widget type things that make it very useful in getting your music noticed as well as providing an easy way for people to purchase your music. Speaking of... Matt Stevens a fellow looper and blogger discussed why now is the best time to be a musician on his blog a bit ago. I agree, it's an age of DYI. The only thing that seems to be holding anyone back is commitment. You can't procrastinate and expect things to happen. So get out there, make friends and don't annoy people with tweets that contain nothing but "HEY BUY MY MUSIC!" it's rude and generally people Will not listen. What's the point? Why interact with someone who yells at you to buy something. Billy Mays you are not.

This brings me to the idea of community. I would like to link to Steve Lawson's Bandcamp directory. It's an example of how to do this right. Build a community, interact with this community, make friends in it, and help promote each other. There be loads of great music in here. Please take your time, stroll through the widgets, and if you like it, support it. (was tempted to type put a ring on it...apologies)

I'm on bandcamp, the new CD will be on bandcamp. Hell just about everything I do will be on bandcamp. In fact Surrent(AKA Jake Hildreth) and I are using bandcamp to document our progress in creating a new project. Here is the first version of what we're doing. IT gets rough in places, but I think preserving the creative process is interesting, to me and Jake anyhow. While making room to demo for the new CD I came across some non looped material I recorded eons ago. Must have been before I got my first looper. I had completely forgotten about them and at least one was decent enough to post here...or so I thought. After listening to them I realized why I didn't release them in any sort of way. However it seems that I've always been a loop kinda guy as these tunes can be tweaked and then looped live for performances. It's always nice to listen to old stuff...cringe...and then be happy knowing that you've progressed since then.

In other news, my Skjold bass is still in the early stages of production, but Pete tells me it's ready to be cut and he starting work on the neck soon. I'm thrilled...I should have it in a few months...hopefully.

When I get more pics I'll post 'em.

In other OTHER news, I'm no longer pulling bass duty for Glass Bead Game. After my son was born I needed to take a good look at the things I was putting time and energy into and evaluate the return. Time away from my family must be productive time, and things just didn't seem to be progressing. There was discussion but differing opinions couldn't fix the issues. It sucks in some ways because the music was great and the musicians are some of the best I've played with, but it just wasn't working out.

So I'm putting that energy into production of a new CD, and some collaberative projects with Surrent. He and i have a show at The Ground Level on Nov 7th. Seperate sets and a collaberative peice. I just might Ustream the thing. We'll see.

I'm Really Bad With Titles...

I'm also really bad at starting out my blogs...but hey look!! I seem to have gotten one started!

Before I go and get all talky and drive most of you away...I managed to find time to complete my bandcamp site. Bandcamp is very nice and simple. All digital downloads with links to buy a physical copy from CD baby if you're so inclined to do so.

Ok...on with the show....

I've been pretty busy the last few weeks, mostly with that whole being a father and having a job kind of thing. It's been four and half months since Octavius was born and it's true...this time goes by way too fast. He has changed so much in such a short time. But I won't bore you with my views on fatherhood.

But I will post some pics:

So...how do I find time to practice? A chore for music types who also happen to be parents to be sure. Well, I've set aside one day a week for myself, with about an hour or two to work in. It's not much and the writing process has been slowed down somewhat but, I've gotten enough material for another project, so I'm ok with the current state of things...

I've also started to use that time to practice with drummer Dave Kontak. I've known Dave for a few years and used to play in a death/black metal band with him called Into Nothing. The first track on his myspace called Into Nothing is a track I produced and played on oh so many years ago. He's a great drummer with a lot of good things ahead of him.

SO yeah...I've decided the next CD will not only be solo bass. You must be asking, "but Steven, you've been pushing this solo bass thing for quite some time now...a drummer you say?" Yes. The truth is, I'll still do a majority of solo shows , but I also would like to have a drummer to bounce things off of...like rocks and other trajectory type objects. I also would like to groove. The loop can be restricting in some cases, and the more complex the device and the more intrusive the technology, the less I can actually enjoy what I'm doing without worrying about the loop crashing and burning. I'm a scatterbrained type of Joe...So the more buttons I have to click the easier it is for me to be confoosed.

Not to fear though...I already know the third will be a solo disk again, as I've already got the idea for that one. But I digress...

Cincinnati Bass Blast...

I'm a bit slow in writing about The Bass Blast, but I took a day off from the interweb thing to decompress and spend the next day with my family...undivided attention and all, well at least until we watched Phase IV...but I digress.

I can't express what an amazing event this was. Camaraderie and a sense of community was present and it was quite a thing to be a part of it all. It's really wonderful to see so many people pull together to showcase the diversity of the Bass as an instrument both in style and in philosophy. One thing is certain, community is the driving force behind these kinds of events and as I said before, it's a rather special thing to be involved with. So if you hear of one being put together near you, please go and show your support.

An incredible amount of thanks goes out to Helena Bouchez and David Yates for organizing the night. They fed us...good food even! Fed musicians are happy musicians! More thanks goes out to Daniel Johnson, Jr. for hooking up and running the event through Ustream all night as well. The man is all sorts of social media guru-ness.

Three very different approaches to the Bass as a lead instrument....

So without further delay...here goes my description of the night:

The evening began with a video introduction by Victor Wooten

Mind Blown...That was not expected...it was a pleasent surprise indeed.

I performed first...I actually got video of it this time. I stuck to my set list, something I don't do usually. All went pretty well, save for a few minor blips, boops and beeps from my loop pedals. Those things never do what the're supposed to do at a live event. Or should I say my feet never do what I tell them at a live event. KAHN!!! indeed. It also didn't help that I wore my sandals for the first half. I always play barefoot, I feel grounded and there is less room for pedal mistakes. Lesson learned.

Doug Johns and Chris Ceja were just incredible to watch. A real treat. If they're anywhere near your town you owe it to yourself to catch these guys. Doug does so much with just four strings and Chris is a madman on the kit. They also did a tribute to Trentin Manning, a fellow bassist who passed away not even a year ago. Fitting as we all knew him and Cinci is his hometown.

Jauqo III-X, Jim Gifford, and DeLawn Simpson (who plays a 9 stringed Ergo guitar) finished the evening with some of the most original sounding material I've heard in a good while. It was a sonic assault in someways and yet, there was so much grove present. Jauqo has a rather innovative technique which allows him to thump, pick and tap with minimal effort. Lots of great sounds from his band, who are formally called Jauqo III-X Reality.

And there you have it. The first annual Cincinnati Bass Blast all blogged out for you. Hopefully it makes sense and hopefully it conveys what an awesome event it was. Here's to next year!

Which then led to many, many other things...some of which were rather embarrassing and perhaps a blog about the embarrassing music I listened to is in order...at least for penance...a sort of public flogging for all of the horrible music I used to listen to...except for these songs... they rock. \m/ <--- That's so freakin' metal! Grrr!

What's my point? Well, ignoring Exodus....Souls of Black and Peace Sells were two songs I just had to learn when I was a yute. Exodus is with us today simply to remind us how to mosh.

Are they truly "Old Skool?" That's up for debate...It is a touch disconcerting to hear 80's music on the oldies station....perhaps it is "Old Skool."

Anyhow...All this was inspired by some twitter discussions and I thought I'd go ahead and blog about it. (I would include the discussion but I've no idear how to do that.) There are more bass centric old skool metal songs out there to be sure....Some more have already come to mind. But in the interest of attempting to make this blog an interactive experience...does anyone who just might be reading have any songs and experiences to contribute to the list?

R.I.P. Darwin...

Today is a sad day...Darwin my tree frog...died. He was a good tree frog and ate many crickets in his day. He lived a long life and well...contributed many frog noises to the household. No signs of illness...he just...croaked.

He was partially responsible for my contribution to The Chain Tape Collective project "Bugs." I recorded the crickets he later ate and warped the sounds into a track which is included as a free download from The Chain Tape Collective.

Let's remember Darwin in all his cricket eating glory, by listening to Martyrs and Saints

The Bozarts show went pretty well. I'm always pretty hard on myself regarding my performance so I usually record video, watch it, beat up on myself even more and then go practice. I forgot to record this one. Had the camera out and thought I hit the record button but alas, I spared myself the agony of obsessing over how to improve.

I did manage to find this photo of me doing things at Bozarts:

I tweeted so hard that night about the event...I managed to tweet two whole pics! I'm amazed at my internet prowess.

I do indeed have a set list together for The Cincinnati Bass Blast. I've added in one of my favorite songs to cover. "Grace" by Sean Malone. I haven't played it in quite some time as it's one of the first youtube vids I uploaded over a year ago. It's a beautiful piece of music originally played on the Chapman Stick. The song has been present at major moments of my life and I see no reason to not play it at The Bass Blast as it's a pretty special occasion.

Over the weekend I procured a Boss RC50. I've been using a RC20XL as my main looper coupled with a Line 6 DL4. It's worked out for me and the only complaint is that my loops are static because of the limitation of the devices. That and it's all mono...BOO HISS! The Boss RC50 is a stereo looper and I can still utilize the DL4. I know these can be buggy, but I'm working on a budget here and I couldn't pass up the price. With about fifteen minutes of messing around with the thing I managed to come up with some pretty nice stuff and can see the possibility of some more fluid compositions. Very exciting!

Besides I blew my budget on this thing:

SixString Fretless made by Pete Skjold he makes some of the finest basses out there! I wont have it until December...I'm dying to play it.

I won't be using the RC50 at the Bass Blast as it's a new device and am not willing to risk some brain fart mucking things up. I'll stick to what I know for the Blast and woodshop after.

Movies:
I am by far not a Dragonball fanatic. But I tell you if there is ever an incarnation of a Dragonball movie you should see, I say skip the new one heading our way and que up Dragonball The Magic Begins. A live action Taiwan mash up of the Monkey King and the anime series. Early 90's Z grade stuff here. I tell you it's a must see if you're one who enjoys spaceships, monks,kung fu, wire fu,talking alligators, poor english dubbing, pervert pig men, magic clouds, aliens bent on world domination and ZOMBIES!

It's just so random in editing, dialogue and effects. It's simply too much fun. I've included for your enjoyment some clips I found on youtube. But this doesn't capture the full gamut of shlockyness, much less include the extreme prejudice in which villagers are gunned down by the lead singer of Vixen.

I should be working...

As the title suggests I should be doing something to ensure I maintain my employment but the VPN isn't connecting so here I am.

Well now, Last week was interesting wasn't it? Jacko moonwalked out of the building and because of that we heard just about every hit he had over the weekend on the radio. The only record I had was Thriller. But was reminded how much good music he made. Personally my favorite stuff was with The Jacksons, but I suppose that would be because I love Motown bass. I remember watching Mtv (when there were videos) hoping they would play the thriller video. I was already knee deep in shlock like "The Blob" and "The Wax Museum" but that video was partially responsible for my love of zombies. Seriously...Vincent F'ing Price!

What else... I should be practicing for the Bass Blast. http://cincybassblast.blogspot.com/ I have my set list down...methinks. It'll have a few slower tunes, which I hope go over well. Those are some of my favorite ones. I struggle with set lists. I want them to flow nicely and because I have some pretty mellow stuff don't want to bore people. Usually I'll have a set list together and abandon it halfway through depending on how I think it's being received. We'll see how it goes. This is the first year for The Bass Blast and hopefully it'll be a yearly celebration of all things bass. So...I have a blog, now what? Well, Like most things I'm involved in I haven't given it much thought beyond "I should probably have a blog." This way of going about things has pretty much worked out for me in the past, so I suppose there is no real reason to go and muck that all up now is there?

How 'bout this:
1. I'll blog about bass.

2. I'll blog about ME playing the bass and where I will be doing such a thing.

3. I'll blather about various things that I find interesting about my life. Probably stuff about my kid, because we all know how interesting it is to hear about other peoples kids!

4. There will be talk of movies...This I swear. Mostly that will include musings such as "Was that a real jet pack Jim Kelly flew in Black Samurai? It sure looked real and not like he was dangling from a crane!"

5. I'm open for suggestions on number five.

6. I promise there will be spelling and grammatical errors...oh and ellipses!
